Richard Matey: Artenvielfalt erhalten

Aufruf der Ghana Alliance for Empowering Rural Communities

A Night At The Opera

Richards siebter Blog-Beitrag

Cultural exchanges build peaceful co-existence and forges inter-cultural friendship which promotes peace and sustainable development. My experience in Germany has presented me many opportunities to interact and engage different people from different cultures as the city of Düsseldorf is rich in cultural diversity. My visit to museums, the art gallery, carnivals and concerts has helped me to appreciate the diversity in European cultures and I now have a very good understanding of European cultures. Not leaving the food out, I have learnt of the different food varieties and eaten some delicious typical German foods. It is worth noting that these cultures did not only define who these people are to me but gave me a deeper sense of understanding the way people think and relate to other people.

The cultural activities undertaken in the Konkreter Friedensdienst Reverse Programme is very beneficial as it offers the opportunity to experience European cultures. It also helps you to learn the great values which gives more meaning to life. The music from the operas, the food, the people, the buildings and the many sites have made a fantastic impression on me and I am glad to have enjoyed such great cultural experience and heritage. I believe society must begin to engross in the younger generation, the values and culture so that they can better appreciate who they are and have a better understanding of what cultures they are part of.

Loyalty and servitude is very vital for climbing the ladder of success. One cannot be at the top without having to serve the least. In my journey in life, I have come to discover that being loyal and serviceable is the key to unlocking the door to rising to the top. Hard work pays and working hard brings success to you. Nevertheless, if you are working hard to becoming successful and you do not learn or develop the character of being loyal and in humility serving other people, including those who are beneath you; your success will come crumbling down. Not that you failed to maintain that success, but your disloyalty and lack of the attitude of service will fight you. Often times in our days we find the people we help to climb the ladder betray us and give us up to our enemies.

Fortsetzung

Some often times conspire with our enemies to work against us. You may wonder why such a person, whom you loved and helped, would do such a thing to you. Sometimes they even go to the extent of taking what is yours and destroying the very thing you used to help them. In this life, one of the greatest evil anyone can perpetuate is to be forgetful. Forgetting what kindness was done to you. When people forget in life where they once were, who they were before they were helped, and what their situation was when they had no one, it shows how human they are and how wicked the human can be. It will require a higher level of human development and intrinsic training in their upbringing to enable them never to forget whom they were and how they were helped by someone to get to where they are now. We all need somebody at a point in our lives. We were never designed or created to be stand-alone beings.
Our humanity requires some level of support from the other. Therefore, it behoves on us to develop the attitude of being grateful, loyal to others and serve others in whichever capacity it maybe. Our world will be a better place when we learn to be each other’s keeper and in doing that, being loyal and being able to serve.

Bringing Transformation

Richards fünfter Blog-Beitrag

Another interesting week with very beautiful moments to share. It was a busy week full of meetings and tasks to achieve set target but also wonderful to work with great minds on the same assignment. I was excited to understand the great minds and potentials within us as Africans working together to achieve a common goal of bringing transformation to our people. I had to ask myself that; if it was that simple for three Africans to brainstorm on a project to bring transformation to our local communities in our respective countries, why then are our leaders after holding talks and meetings at the various AU summits, unable to come out with a concrete goal of transforming our beloved continent.

Fortsetzung

I begin to ask myself; is it about the mindset? Is it about lack of a common vision? Or it’s just the hatred in disguise we have for each other hindering our inability to work together with the untapped potential in us to rise to become the most powerful continent the world is waiting to emerge. I find it very disheartening, when I see how my fellow Africans work so hard to contribute to development elsewhere and very little to the development of our very own. Many are the questions asked by our young ones. Many are the struggles of our African teeming youth who also suffer from the impacts of climate change. I often ask myself; when are we going to realise that we can actually bring about the desired change we imagine, if we see development as a shared responsibility and support each other as Africans. I see and hear of wars happening in our African countries and we do not care to get involved in peace talks. Rather, we wait for others from afar to bring peace to our fellow brothers while we stand aside and look unconcerned. We prefer to solidarize with others than to care for our very own.

Notwithstanding, I believe there will come a time when we as African youth will tell our own story. I believe a generation is coming that will rise up against the injustice we emit to ourselves and look beyond ourselves to the common good of us all as one People, one Africa and one Voice.

Über (neue) Freundschaft

Richards vierter Blog-Beitrag

“If you go out looking for friends, you're going to find they are very scarce. If you go out to be a friend, you'll find them everywhere.” (Zig Ziglar)
Having someone you can call a friend in a foreign land is very satisfying and refreshing. You don’t need to know them all your life to know how good and beautiful they are. A moment with them is so much more than money could ever buy.
Life has a way of giving us like-precious people who we meet and they add more meaning to life. In a world full of business and a lot of hustle and bustle, having one you can call a true friend is very needful. A friend is not someone who you only have a conversation with but one who shares your joy and hurt. A friend is one who is not only happy with you in your success moments but also is there for you when you go through the fires of life.
Sometimes in life, our inner fire goes out. It is ignited once again by an encounter with another human being. I have had a very wonderful person who is not only helpful and a co-worker but one I can call a friend. Knowing you in these last couple of weeks have been very exciting and supportive.  You have accommodated my worries and have made life easy and meaningful. A person with such a kind heart is worth keeping and it is very important to build on such relationship.

My Friday For Future

Richards dritter Blog-Beitrag

Last week has been very engaging and stimulating meeting the other participants of the programme and joining the Fridays for Future march in Düsseldorf. Working together with these amazing women from different parts of the world brings more light and beauty to team building. I really admire the wisdom from these women and can only appreciate the goodness of God in endowing women with great wisdom.
I also had a great new experience of activism during the wonderful non-violent protest involving thousands of people. I have personally been involved in climate strikes and have organised quite a few. But I was fascinated by the huge numbers that turned up. My engagement with some of the protestors revealed the desperation and urgency for a call to action. I was also amazed by the concerns and interest showed by non-protestors or passers-by in the march and the tolerance showed to the protestors as the march caused some traffic on the streets. It demonstrated the support and recognition given to work done by climate activists.  This speaks a lot to the fact that given the space, we can have very peaceful protects with collaboration from all sides without any traces of violence.
It was also very interesting to note the involvement of the aged. Understanding that they have contributed to the current climatic conditions we have now and the need to address them for the future generation. My take is that if we all will decide to take local actions to augment the strikes and daily mount political pressure on our leaders, posterity will give gratitude for what we’ve done.

Die "Entwicklung" kam aus Afrika

Richards zweiter Blog-Beitrag

I have had a greet second week with exciting views on cultures and meeting new friends. My engagements with different people of different cultures, all living in a new environment, has given a different perspective to how people perceive life and why they do what they do. It is very interesting to me to understand the different cultures and how they are all woven into this new environment to redefine our culture and who we have become.
After engaging with people from different African countries, Russians, Persians, Dutch, South Americans and an Afghan, I have come to the conclusion that people, depending on the societies they come from and where they are, for some reason do not represent who they are and what they live for and by virtue of having to live in a society uniquely different from theirs adapt to new cultures to give them a new identity.
I have come to understand the differences in how people especially from the Global North perceive as African or what Africa is and those from the Global South who by virtue of resettlement by their parents or guardian of a sort have grown up in Germany.
Juxtaposed to how we in Africa define who we are and from our perspective, perceive how Africa is represented here in the Global North. It is worth noting, the great misrepresentation of Africa to and by the Global North. I have realised that people after having travelled to Africa and also reading about Africa from books, have given them a certain impression of who the African is or what Africa is.
Why am I saying this? Europeans especially Germans are noted for exploring other countries and yet these explorations for some reasons have not given a true identity to the places visited. A visit to explore a place for whatever reason it maybe, must be able to give one a fair understanding of what defines the people in that geographical location. There are many untold stories about Africa and who we really are. Colonial exploitations were grounds for misrepresenting who we are as Africans. Though it is of truth that civilization and advancement came originally from Africa, little of it is said and represented in Germany, even in books I have seen here.
If we as a people can go beyond our interest in a people, we can truly understand and get a very good mental picture or the right outlook of Africa as a people with varied rich cultures with similarities which are complex in nature, worth learning from and very beautiful to engage.

Ankunft

Richards erster Blog-Beitrag vom 19. September 2019

Hello, I am Richard Matey, a young environmentalist who works with Abibiman Foundation in Ghana as the Programmes Officer. Abibiman Foundation is a non partisan, non governmental organization dedicated to the promotion of sustainable livelihoods, peace and development. I am a participant for the KF Reverse programme for 2019. I arrived in Düsseldorf on the 31st of August 2019. I started off the KF Reverse programme with the programme seminar in Dortmund from the 3rd to the 5th of September, 2019. There was a warm welcome from all the participants of this year’s programme, a round of introductions  to know each other and socializing to get acquainted with each other as well. Markus Pfeil, our facilitator for the 3 days induction seminar took us through very exciting and thought provoking sessions.

The first day had presentations from Engagement Global, Eine Welt Netz and German Watch. It was very intriguing when we as participants had to do a little work on rearranging the 17 goals of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development according to order of priority as we deem fit.

Fortsetzung

We were elated in the positioning of some of the goals in order of importance or preference as we had diverse opinions on where to put some of the goals, for example; goal 5,7 and 17 and  also goal 1 which is on no poverty. My team was diverse in opinion on what poverty is in relative terms. Moving forward, we all enjoyed the great presentations from each participants on our work in the respective  organizations which we are from. In addition to that, we  had to plan for our trip to Brussels and talk about very interesting topics of discussion from the EU for our engagement in Brussels. Issues of trade policy, climate financing, agriculture and energy were looked at for dialogue. Learning and experiencing the rich cultural diversity was as important for me for connecting, networking and for enhancing co-creation. My stay in Germany for the past week has been very wonderful, enegaging and full of excitement as I have met with new friends building great networks.
